The ultimate list and font pairings that work seamlessly in Squarespace and Canva

Fonts are one of the most underrated tools for building brand recognition and guiding your visitor’s experience. From the moment someone lands on your website, your typography is working behind the scenes—setting the tone, building trust, and shaping how people perceive your business.

If you’re anything like most of my clients, you’re designing your brand using two main tools: Squarespace and Canva. Which means choosing fonts that work seamlessly in both is a total game-changer. Native fonts save time, simplify your workflow, and ensure brand consistency across everything from your site to your Instagram graphics. No fancy uploads, custom coding, or premium font licenses required.

In this post, we’ll cover:

  • How to pick the right fonts for your brand

  • Typography 101: hierarchy, readability, and SEO basics

  • What your fonts are really saying about your brand

  • A curated list of native fonts + pairings you can steal

Whether you’re rebranding, refreshing, or just getting started—this guide will help you make smart, strategic font choices without the overwhelm.

How to choose fonts that match your brand

Fonts aren’t ALL about personality. The right fonts will reflect your brand’s tone, values, and energy. Here’s how to pick fonts that actually fit:

  • Start with your brand personality. Are you modern and minimal? Soft and feminine? Bold and quirky? Fonts give visual voice to your personality.

  • Think about your audience. What kind of style would resonate with your dream clients or customers?

  • Keep it readable. Your fonts need to look good at all sizes and be legible on every screen.

  • Look at the meaning. I choose Red Hats for my body copy because my mom was a in a red hat club, and it matched the look I was going for. I picked Times New Roman for my headings (probably the most known font ever), bc to me, it’s classy and has an accessible feel.

Next, know your type. Most fonts fall into three categories:

  • Serif Fonts – These have little "feet" or strokes at the end of each letter. They convey elegance, tradition, and authority. Perfect for professional services, wellness brands, and content-heavy sites.

  • Sans Serif Fonts – These have clean, modern lines without the decorative ends. They're approachable, casual, and easy to read on screens. Elegant, traditional, authoritative. Great for professional services, wellness brands, and content-heavy sites.

  • Script/Accent Fonts – Think handwritten, whimsical, or calligraphic. These add a touch of flair or emotion but should be used sparingly (like in testimonials or quotes).

📌 Pro Tip: Pair a serif and sans serif for visual contrast. Want more variety? Use font weight, all caps vs. lowercase, or spacing (that’s called kerning). All of THAT can be done in site styles.

Add a descriptive font to add a little bit of flair to your site. You won’t be writing headings or long paragraphs with this, so have some fun with it. Just make sure it’s still readable.

How to change fonts in Squarespace

Squarespace includes over 600 Google Fonts, over 1,000 Adobe Fonts, and several standard system fonts (the usual suspects that come loaded on most computers, hello Arial) — all professionally licensed, optimized for web, and designed to look great across devices. You don’t need to upload or pay for premium fonts unless you want to.

You can update the fonts for your entire site in seconds. This is one of the biggest advantages of using Squarespace. To change fonts:

  1. Go to Site Styles (click the paintbrush icon).

  2. Click Fonts.

  3. Adjust HeadingsParagraph, or Miscellaneous.

  4. Choose font style, size, and weight. Changes apply sitewide instantly.

This menu also allows you to decide the size and weight of each different font type. Once you make any changes, they are automatically set and live, on every page.

🧠 Designer Tip: Create a hidden test page with H1–H4 and P1–P3 styled out. I use this on every client build and all my templates—so you can see your entire typography system in one glance before publishing.

Heading hierarchy and SEO basics

Using a consistent heading hierarchy not only makes your site easier to read (which improvers user experience)— it also helps with accessibility and SEO.

A clear hierarchy helps your reader understand what’s important, skim the page easily, and take action faster. It also is the blueprint that Google and other search engines use to determine what your site is about. Which is why you want your main keywords (search terms) ~for sure~ in the H1 and H2 spot.

Think of your website like a book:

  • H1 = Title

  • H2 = Chapter titles

  • H3–H4 = Subsections

Squarespace gives you six text styles to organize your content: H1–H4 for headings and P1–P3 for body text. Here’s a quick breakdown:

Headings:

  • H1 – Use once per page (usually the page title). Most important keywords go here.

  • H2 – Section titles. Break up big content blocks.

  • H3 – Sub-sections or supporting points.

  • H4 – Optional; great for highlighting key details.

Body Text:

  • P1 – Larger paragraph text for intros or standout sentences.

  • P2 – Default paragraph style (this one!).

  • P3 – Smaller text for disclaimers or subtle notes.

*This is a little beyond this article, but if you’re interested for a more in depth article on SEO, and where else to put those keywords, I wrote this blog post that covers that.

Using fonts that are native to both Squarespace AND Canva

Both platforms offer hundreds of fonts—but they don’t always overlap. If you’re using Squarespace and Canva, you’ll want fonts that show up natively in both.

Trouble is, neither company publishes a list. You’d have to dig through menus and toggle tabs to figure it out.

🥴 Been there. Which is why I did the legwork for you.

You’ll find my curated list and pairings below—no more guesswork, no more disappointment. Canva’s dreamy scripts + Squarespace’s sturdy sans serifs = now happily married.

Here it is. A list of my favorite serif fonts, sans serif fonts and script fonts found in both places. 🙌🏼

To make choosing your fonts as simple as possible, pick one font from each of the three graphics below. The first one will be your headings, the second will be your body copy (or vice versa), then the descriptive script will be your complimentary accent.
